Liverpool Famine Memorial -
Sculptor selected

As County Mayo was so devastated by the famine this press release should be of interest to the 'Mayo Alive' readers.

The artist who will produce a moment commemorating the Irish Great Hunger and Liverpool's role in it has now been appointed. Eamonn O'Doherty from Derry was chosen in open competition by the Liverpool Great Hunger Commemoration Committee. He will now begin preparing a design for the monument which is to be sited near the centre of the city.

Mr O' Doherty, 57, is one of Ireland's most famous public artists whose work may be seen in many of its major cities. Visitors to the centre of Dublin will be familiar with his sculpture depicting Anna Livia Plurabelle, affectionately nick-named the 'Floozie in the Jacuzzi' by the city's residents. Other pieces of large-scale public sculpture he has produced are to be found in Galway, Antrim, Dun Laoghaire, Enniskillen, Cobh, Navan and New Ross.

The Great Hunger Committee intends to raise £35,000 to pay for the completed monument. It has been helped on its way with the generous donation of £5000 from the Irish Government and hopes to obtain the balance by public donation and corporate sponsorship. It is hoped that the monument will be completed and installed on site by July 1997.
